Hawker’s Hut: A 2-3 hour walk taking in pub, tearooms and coast path.

Firstly use the walk to the pub (about 30-40 minutes)

From the pub car park walk up to the road and turn left. You can take the farm track – picture 1 or the road – picture 2. (The track does get muddy and means you miss the tea rooms and church on the way to the coast path so I have use the road for these directions)

Go down the road until you get to the award winning Rectory Tearooms. (As seen on the Hairy Bikers and Bob Mortimer and Paul Woodhouse’s ‘Gone Fishing’ show.) They serve wonderful cakes, gluten free cakes, cream teas and light lunches.  You can take dogs in the gardens, but not inside.

Opposite the tearooms is the Church of St Morwenna and St John The Baptist, which is where the Reverand Hawker used to preach – and behind that is the Vicarage. You can walk next to the church following the coast path sign or cut through the church yard as I did….

If you go through the church yard then there is a stone stile taking you onto the coast path

Walk along the path, through the gate, to the cliffs.

14.png

At the gate turn left. It is quite close to the edge so you may want to keep dogs on leads around this section

As you walk along the coast keep your eyes open for the Hawker’s Hut sign

If you want to go and see the hut, which was built by Reverand Hawker in 1837 so he could contemplate God and the sea (smoke opium) and write poems and hymns, then go down the little path and steps that lead to the hut itself (The National Trust’s smallest property!)

There are beautiful views from here

You can then return home the way you came, or by road from the pub, or you can carry to complete the circle walk ….

If continuing, then carry on along the coast path down to the corner of the field

24.png

Go through this kissing gate and carry on across the next field to the gate at the top of the valley

Go through the gate and continue down towards the river at the bottom

At the bottom, at the footpath marker turn left and walk along the river inland

33.png
34.png

Continue along the path along the floor of the valley through the woodland. At the marker near a gate to a private cottage (Tidnacott) turn up to the left

35.png
36.png

Continue to the next marker. Here you have a choice…If you go on up the steps you join up with the path back to the pub, or the walk home continues to the right down over the bridge

37.png
38.png

After crossing the bridge, carry on through the woods following the markers, taking the path to the right and up

39.png
40.png

This takes you back to the path where you entered the woods en route to the pub

41.png

Go back up the path and over the stile into the fields

42.png

Carry on back over the fields, past the manor house farm, until you get to the final field where you can see the original farm’s wind turbine in front of you. Carry on back over the fields, past the manor house farm, until you get to the final field where you can see the original farm’s wind turbine in front of you and GCHQ in the distance

This takes you back to the farm road. Turn left and go straight over the cross roads, up the road until the Woodford turn on your right.

This walk can be done in parts if you want to take your time. You could walk past the pub to begin with then have a tea break at the tea rooms, then go onto Hawker’s hut and down along the valley then come back via the pub for a meal or well deserved drink. Dogs love this walk. We do recommend decent walking shoes as its quite steep in places. (Though usually downhill!)
