Dog friendly Places of interest

We are ideally situated half way between Clovelly (in North Devon) and Bude (in North Cornwall). Both are wonderful places to visit and welcome dogs. We are in the parish of Morwenstow, which has its own claim to fame with the Reverend Hawker (and Hawker’s hut – the National Trust’s smallest property!), The Church of St Morwenna and St John The Baptist and the now famous Rectory tea rooms (as seen on TV; both with The Hairy Bikers and Paul Whitehouse and Bob Mortimer’s fishing trip). The 13th Century pub, The Bush Inn, serves great food with amazing  sea views The coast path that runs all along our area is stunning and is talked of fondly in the best seller ‘The Salt Path’ by Raynor Winn. Between Morwenstow and Clovelly to the north is the Hartland peninsula – an area of outstanding natural beauty, with gorgeous circular walks incorporating the coast path around Marsland Mouth, Welcombe Mouth, Hartland Quay and Speke’s Mill.  Further north there is Westwood Ho!, Bideford, Appledore, Instow and Northam Burrows: all less than a 45 minute drive, this side of Barnstaple and all very dog friendly.

Within Morwenstow we have the beaches of Stanbury Mouth and Duckpool and between them and Bude is Sandymouth and Northcott Mouth…. all beautiful beaches with glorious sand when the tide is low and all dog friendly. It is possible to park at Sandymouth then walk all the way into Bude along the sand as the tide reaches its lowest point, then stop for a coffee and walk back across the cliff top, coast path (or vice versa of course.)

In Bude itself there are Crooklets and Summerleaze beaches, that always have sand, even at high tide. There is lots to do in Bude for all the family, from surfing to sand castles, swimming in the sea pool and lovely walks along the canal and river as well as lots of choice of tea rooms, cafes and restaurants. Dogs are allowed on Summerleaze beach on leads from 10am - 6pm in the summer and off lead at all other times.

South again of Bude is Widemouth Bay…a stunning surfing beach, the south part, called Black Rock is dog friendly. Along the A39 down into Cornwall it is only a short drive on to Crackington Haven, Boscastle, the world-famous King Arthur’s castle at Tintagel and then onto ‘Doc Martin land’ of Port Isaac and Padstow with Rick Stein’s fish restaurant and the best Cornish pasties in the world…officially!!
